Conservation is the actions taken in order to preserve cultural property and natural history. Steps such as examination, documentation, cleaning, treatment, or maintaining proper environments, all care for the object in question with the goal of prolonging its life for future generations.
Conservation employs both science and art in order to achieve its goal of preservation. Extensive research is conducted not just in the art historical / technical aspects, but the scientific analysis of materials – how they degrade over time and their reaction with other substances. Careful consideration is taken when deciding how to properly preserve an object for the future while also making it accessible for study and appreciation in the present.
